About Me

Welcome to The Old White Cottage!

My name is Melanie and I'm a lucky wife and mother to 2 daughters.  Five years ago, I was a full-time engineer.  That all changed with my first pregnancy when I was unexpectedly told I could no longer work due to pre-eclampsia.  After giving birth, I fully expected to return to work, but I didn't have the heart to put my colicky baby in daycare.  Just when things were settling down, baby number 2 arrived.  It wasn't my plan but I've been home ever since.

Blogging happened for me by accident.  One day, I accidentally stumbled onto a home and garden blog ... then another and another and another.  At the time, I had a 3 year-old and a 1-year-old and I was bored with the monotony of life at home.  I know many women dream of staying home but I missed my professional life terribly and I was becoming unhappy.  I suppose I thrive on having a lot to do and I felt like I needed more.

Prior to having children, I loved to decorate and garden but between being pregnant and barely able to move and being sleep-deprived with two bad sleepers in a row, I had I put that part of my life on hold.  However, I was at the point where life had settled down (and I was getting some sleep!) so I thought, "Why not create a blog of my own?".  Blogging also presented me with the opportunity to complete all the unfinished projects that had piled up and to document it at the same time.  I created this blog as a diary to myself so it was a surprise to find friends out there who shared the same enthusiasm.  Having readers just makes this that much more rewarding.

Blogging helped me find happiness in my home again.  Of course, that happiness and sense of purpose affected my entire life positively. Now, less than 2 years later, life couldn't be better!
