September Garden

This was how my walkway looked in the spring ...


... and here it is now! Ahhh! Crowded is an understatement. Russian Sage is out of control and I decided not to pinch my mums back so they're blooming already.



I planted the Russian Sage on the left in late spring and each plant was about 2" high. I had no idea they would grow so fast! I need to move them, but there are so many bees on them.

And in the backyard ... Our tiny little veggie garden patch was thriving, but I have officially abandoned it. Why? Read on ... This picture was actually taken a month ago and it is fuller now. Tomatoes are over 6' tall!

A couple of weeks ago, I made a delicious homemade pizza and a salad and used a ton of homegrown tomatoes. So good! Unfortunately, the next day I realized I'd been bitten by chiggers while picking tomatoes. I'll spare you the details, but it wasn't pretty. I thought I had chicken pox again! Veggie garden still has plenty of tomatoes, but I'm afraid to go near it. I'm actually looking forward to cold weather so I can tear it all out.

  1. Those tomatoes look amazing, and I don't even like raw tomatoes! Seriously, I know chigger bites are awful, but if you put on long pants - for extra protection, you can even pull socks up OVER your pants - and then go out, you should be safe. It works for mosquitoes and ticks, so I'm sure it would work with chiggers too.

  5. This may sound crazy, but as a child we would use a cotton ball to dab on Pine sol (especially on our legs, ankles, and feet) before working in the garden or berry picking. We reeked of Pine sol, but it beat the heck out of being eaten alive by chiggers!

  6. I don't think we have chiggers here in CA. There must be some way to harvest those tomatoes!!
